School History

Arlington School is an exceptional college preparatory high school located on the grounds of

McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts. Founded in 1961 as a fully independent

educational program for adolescents in residence at the hospital, Arlington School has evolved

through developments pursuant to Massachusetts Public Law 766 (1972) and the Massachusetts

Education Reform Act (1993) to a day school for a diverse body of emotionally challenged

students from throughout the Boston metropolitan area. Although the school has long taken

pride in the uniqueness and authenticity of its mission and methods, it enjoys full approval from

the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as a Private Special

Education Day School Program. Nearly all of the thirty-eight students presently in attendance at

the school have been referred by their hometown public school systems and learn in concordance

with an Individualized Education Program (IEP).
