Health and Fitness

All Arlington School students participate once a week in a variety of Physical Education activities. Students can also choose Physical Education as a daily elective.

Students in Physical Education classes are encouraged to participate in activities that promote physical fitness, decrease sedentary lifestyles, and relieve mental and emotional tension. Arlington School faculty and staff have all received training in mindfulness techniques, which are used frequently in c
lassrooms and counseling groups to decrease student anxiety and promote attention and focus.

Health classes are also provided.  The Massachusetts DESE requires each high school student to take one semester of Health during his or her high school career. Students take Health at Arlington School only if the requirement has not been met in a prior placement.

The on-site school nurse and the physical education specialist work closely together to provide academic instruction in health and fitness as well as skills to develop healthy lifestyles and improved coping strategies.  Clinical staff offer a weekly Wellness Group as a counseling group option.  The school nurse also oversees the health needs of students, provides individual health instruction, does routine screenings and administers medication.

McLean Hospital’s Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, EMTs and Doctor on Call (DOC) are available at all times for emergency medical services.
